Studies on Effects of Korean Ginseng on Enteric Microorganisms and Antibody Response in Mice

Abstract
This is a report on attempts to look for effects of the ginseng on microbial agents and influence on modulation of the host immune systems.
Our studies composed of three parts; 1) in vitro studies on the effects of water-and/or alcohol-extracts of the ginseng to the growth of various microorganisms, 2) the effects of ginseng extracts in causing variation of the intestinal microbial population in mice 3) the influence of ginseng preparation on the antibody-mediated host immune response to the antigens of Salmonella typhi and of sheep-RBC in the group of ginseng extracts-fed mice.
In general, low concentrations of the ginseng extracts (0.002 and 0.02%, w/v) seemed -to enhance the growth of microorganisms, both of pathogens and non-pathogens in the in vitro tests, but at relatively high concentrations (0.2 and . 2.0%) , the growth of such :organisms was slightly inhibited. There was some changes in the intestinal microbial populations of the group of ginseng extracts-fed mice compared with those of the control ;group, that is, the population of Escherichia spp. was decreased during and up to 2 weeks post-oral administration of the extracts, while the population of Lactobacilli spp. tended to increase.
There seemed to be not much difference in antibody production against the antigens ,of Salmonella typhi and sheep-RBC between the ginseng-fed group of mice and the control group. We discussed the results of studies with relation to enhancement of non-specific resistance of the host against bacterial infections.
